There’s a particular kind of pain that comes from being blindsided. Not the pain of the event itself, but the pain of realizing you never saw it coming — that you could have braced, and didn’t. Psychologists have a name for the opposite of that: anticipatory coping. It’s the quiet, unglamorous work of thinking about a hard thing before it happens, so that when it does happen, some part of you already knows how to stand.
This article isn’t about how to AI-proof your career, or which skills to learn, or how to build a side hustle. Those questions are worth asking, but they’re intensely personal — what makes sense for a 28-year-old software engineer looks nothing like what makes sense for a 54-year-old accountant. What isn’t personal, what applies to almost everyone, is the psychological terrain we’re all about to walk through. The mechanisms that get triggered when a person’s competence stops being needed. The specific ache of no longer being useful. The identity crisis that shows up wearing the mask of a “productivity problem.” That’s what this piece is about — not solving the AI jobs crisis, but understanding your own mind well enough that it doesn’t ambush you.
What the People Building This Technology Are Actually Saying
It’s worth pausing on who is doing the warning here. This isn’t a fringe economist or a doomsday blogger. It’s the people who built the thing.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, in a widely discussed 2025 interview, said the technology holds unimaginable possibilities to unleash mass good and bad at scale, describing a scenario where “cancer is cured, the economy grows at 10% a year, the budget is balanced — and 20% of people don’t have jobs.” He wasn’t hedging. He told reporters, “We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming… I don’t think this is on people’s radar.”
Months later, in a 20,000-word essay, Amodei went further, describing the coming shift as something categorically different from past technological disruptions. He argued the technology “is not replacing a single job but acting as a ‘general labor substitute for humans'” — meaning it doesn’t just automate one industry the way robotics automated manufacturing. It can touch finance, consulting, law, and tech simultaneously, denying workers the option to “switch lanes” to another industry where their skillset was a match. He called the likely disruption “unusually painful,” warning it would happen faster than previous labor market shocks because “it is hard for people to adapt to this pace of change, both to the changes in how a given job works and in the need to switch to new jobs.”
It’s worth being honest that this is a contested, moving target, not settled fact. Later in 2026, Amodei himself softened this framing somewhat, drawing on the “Jevons Paradox” — the idea that automation increases demand for labor rather than eliminating it — and suggesting that “if you automate 90% of the job, then everyone does the 10% of the job. And the 10% kind of expands to be 100% of what people do.” Other prominent voices, including Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, have walked back some of their earlier apocalyptic predictions. Altman, who once warned entry-level roles were at serious risk, told an interviewer in 2026 he’d been “pretty wrong” about AI’s near-term economic impact.
But even the optimistic camp isn’t promising a smooth ride for everyone. And some of the hard data is already in. An MIT study using a simulation tool called the Iceberg Index found that AI can already technically replace 11.7% of the U.S. labor market — roughly $1.2 trillion in wages across finance, healthcare, and professional services. The visible layoffs are only a fraction of that. The rest is building quietly beneath the surface, in HR, logistics, and office administration.

It’s going to sit with a harder question: what happens inside a person when the thing they built their competence around simply isn’t needed anymore?
The World Won’t Feel This Evenly
One detail that gets lost in the doomscroll of AI headlines is that this isn’t a single global event. It’s a patchwork, and where you live will shape how it lands on you.
The IMF’s Kristalina Georgieva has been unusually blunt about this. “Some economies have greater shares of occupations that have high-exposure to AI and this will shape the impact the technology will bring,” she noted, describing research ranking 125 countries by preparedness. At the top of that list: Singapore, the United States, Denmark, Germany. At the bottom: low-income countries, which are “dramatically worse off.”
Counterintuitively, it’s the wealthiest, most digitized economies that face the largest share of exposed jobs. In advanced economies, about 60 percent of jobs may be impacted by AI, compared to 40% in emerging markets and roughly 26% in low-income countries. That’s because AI is unusually good at automating cognitive, white-collar work — the kind of work concentrated in rich, service-heavy economies — rather than the physical, low-digitization labor that still dominates in poorer countries.
Georgieva has described the overall picture starkly: “AI is like a tsunami hitting the labour market. We assess 40% of jobs globally, 60% in advanced economies, will be impacted by AI in the next few years, either enhanced, made more productive, or replaced.” Within rich countries, she’s also flagged a split by generation: tasks eliminated by AI tend to be concentrated at the entry level, meaning young people seeking their first jobs are finding it harder to get a foothold, while the jobs untouched by AI so far are increasingly low-paying. “The middle class is inevitably going to be affected,” she said.
This matters for how you mentally prepare, because it means the emotional shock will not be a single, unified cultural event you can process alongside your neighbors. Some regions will feel it as a slow-burning restructuring of the middle class; others will barely feel it directly for years. Some professions inside the same country will be gutted while others are barely touched. This unevenness is itself psychologically destabilizing — it’s harder to make sense of a threat that doesn’t hit everyone the same way, because you can’t simply look around you and calibrate against your peers. You may be watching your industry collapse while your brother-in-law’s trade is untouched, and the dissonance of that — the sense that this is happening to you specifically, rather than to “society” — can make it feel more personal and more shameful than it actually is.
Universal Basic Income: The Solution Everyone’s Circling, Nobody’s Built
If a large share of human labor really does become economically unnecessary, the question of how people survive without wages becomes unavoidable. The idea that keeps surfacing, from people who would otherwise disagree about almost everything, is some version of universal basic income — funded, in most serious proposals, by taxing the companies and capital that AI displacement enriches.
Amodei has been explicit about this mechanism. “If AI-driven labor displacement ends up being large in magnitude and permanently drives down the demand for labor, it will likely be necessary to go beyond mere incentive programs to long-term income support for a significant fraction of the labor force,” he wrote. “Mechanisms such as universal basic income could be financed through taxes on relevant companies or raising the capital gains tax.”
Elon Musk has made a similar, more sweeping claim. “In less than 20 years — but maybe even as little as 10 or 15 years — the advancements in AI and robotics will bring us to the point where working is optional,” he’s said, adding, “There will be no poverty in the future and so no need to save money. There will be universal high income.”
Sam Altman’s position has been more complicated, and it’s worth understanding why, because it says something about how the people at the center of this see the psychology of the problem too. Altman personally funded a $14 million UBI study through OpenResearch, and has since said he no longer believes in universal basic income as much as he once did, saying he’s “much more interested in ways where we think about kind of collective ownership” — shared equity or compute access rather than a simple cash check. His concern, in his own words, is that “if it’s limited and hard to use and not well integrated, then the kind of existing rich people are going to bid up the price and it’s going to lead to further stratification.” In other words, even the person who funded the largest UBI experiment in Silicon Valley worries that money alone might not solve what’s actually broken — a worry that lines up with the psychological argument this article is making. A check can replace an income. It’s much less clear it can replace a sense of purpose.
There’s actual data on how people respond to no-strings-attached income, and it complicates the usual fear that free money kills motivation. Finland’s basic income trial gave unemployed people payments of about €620 a month without means testing, continuing even after they found work. An analysis by McKinsey found that people who received the payments actually increased their work activity, alongside reporting improvements in wellbeing, mental health, physical health, and trust. The report’s own conclusion, as summarized by tax policy analysts, was that “a relatively small positive intervention seemed to have generated multiple mutually reinforcing positive effects.”
That’s genuinely encouraging. But it’s worth being precise about what it shows: money reduced anxiety and improved wellbeing for people who were already unemployed and searching for work in a functioning economy with plenty of jobs still available. It doesn’t tell us what happens to identity and meaning when the search itself becomes permanently pointless for a large share of the population — when there’s genuinely no job on the other side of the payment. That’s a different psychological territory, and it’s the one this article is really about.
The Mechanism Nobody’s Pricing In: What Work Actually Does For a Mind
Here is the part that tends to get skipped in every economic conversation about AI and jobs. Even if the money problem gets solved — even if some version of UBI or shared AI ownership genuinely covers people’s material needs — there’s a separate problem that a check cannot touch. Work does several things for the human psyche that have nothing to do with income.
The psychologist Marie Jahoda spent decades studying unemployment and identified what she called the latent functions of employment — the things a job quietly provides beyond the paycheck. Employment provides a time structure for the day, widens social relationships beyond the family, links a person to goals that transcend the purely personal, defines central aspects of status and identity, and enforces regular activity. Jahoda’s argument was that the psychological damage of unemployment isn’t only about lost income — it comes fundamentally from losing these latent categories of experience that work quietly supplies.
This is why the data on unemployment and mental health is so consistent and so large in scale. Meta-analyses have found an average effect size of d = 0.51, with unemployed people showing meaningfully more distress than employed people across depression, anxiety, psychosomatic symptoms, and self-esteem — and roughly 34% of unemployed people show clinically significant psychological problems, compared to 16% of employed people. At its most extreme, unemployment research describes feelings of shame, humiliation, insecurity, and worthlessness, and damage to a person’s cherished identity and self-narrative.
For men specifically, this tends to have a particular shape. Research on unemployment and identity notes that men in cultures with strong breadwinner identity norms tend to show more severe identity disruption after job loss, and are more likely to suppress their distress rather than seek support — externalizing it instead through irritability, alcohol use, and withdrawal from relationships. Facing joblessness, many men report feeling like they no longer have a purpose, leading to feelings of emptiness and uselessness that mirror depressive symptoms — a “lost” feeling that hits hardest for men who have strongly tied their self-worth to professional achievement and the provider role. Men in their 40s and 50s — often supporting families — tend to be especially vulnerable to this kind of identity shock, and middle-class men who lose stable jobs can be hit harder psychologically than those already in financial distress, precisely because of the suddenness of the blow to their sense of self.
None of this is included to frighten you. It’s included because it’s real, it’s well-documented, and pretending it isn’t happening is exactly the kind of unpreparedness this article is trying to prevent. If your sense of being a man — of being necessary — has quietly become fused with your job title, that fusion is worth noticing now, while it’s still an abstract idea, rather than discovering it the hard way during a layoff email. The Specific Psychological Mechanisms Worth Knowing About in Advance
If mass AI displacement does unfold the way Amodei and others fear, several specific psychological patterns are likely to show up. Understanding the mechanism in advance doesn’t make it painless, but it does something important: it lets you recognize the feeling as a known pattern rather than a personal verdict on your worth.
The identity fusion collapse. Most of us, without noticing, let “what I do” quietly become “who I am.” This works fine as long as the job exists. The moment it doesn’t, the mind experiences the loss not as “I lost a source of income” but as “I have ceased to exist in the way I understood myself.” This is why job loss so often produces something closer to grief than to inconvenience — because in a real sense, a version of the self has died. Researchers describe this as identity destabilization that occurs “even when the loss has little to do with performance,” which is an important thing to hold onto: none of this is evidence you did anything wrong.
The obsolescence spiral. There’s a particular flavor of dread that comes not from losing a job but from suspecting your entire skill set — the thing you spent a career building — might never again be economically necessary. Learned helplessness and locus of control collapse. When a person perceives a threat as both massive and entirely outside their control — as a “tsunami,” to use Georgieva’s word, rather than a wave they can learn to surf — a common psychological response is to stop trying altogether, even in areas where effort would still help. This is a well-documented pattern: when people believe outcomes are unrelated to their actions, motivation and effort collapse even on tasks where effort still matters. Recognizing this pattern in yourself — noticing the moment you start to think “there’s no point trying” about anything, not just the specific thing that’s actually beyond your control — is one of the most useful pieces of self-awareness available here. Comparison-driven shame. Because AI’s impact is so uneven across regions, industries, and individuals, it’s easy to end up comparing your situation to someone whose field wasn’t touched, and to read your own disruption as personal failure rather than structural bad luck. This comparison trap deserves active resistance — the unevenness described earlier in this article isn’t a referendum on anyone’s worth.
Anticipatory grief and denial. Some people, sensing this shift coming, will swing toward denial — refusing to engage with the topic at all because it’s too unsettling. Others will swing toward catastrophizing, treating every AI headline as confirmation of imminent personal ruin. Both are avoidance strategies dressed up as opposite reactions. The middle path — acknowledging the uncertainty without either dismissing it or drowning in it — is harder, and it’s the one the science below actually supports.
Why Knowing This in Advance Actually Changes the Outcome
This is the part worth taking seriously, because it’s not just comforting philosophy — it’s demonstrated in the research literature, across contexts that have nothing to do with each other.
The psychologist Irving Janis spent years studying how surgical patients coped with the stress of impending operations, and coined the phrase “the work of worrying” to describe something counterintuitive: patients who did some deliberate emotional preparation beforehand — who let themselves consciously anticipate and think through what was coming — fared psychologically better afterward than patients who avoided thinking about it and stayed falsely calm right up until the event. Janis’s model, drawn from his 1958 study of patients’ reactions to impending surgery, identified stress inoculation and the work of worrying as ways of preventing maladaptive reactions by providing appropriate information at the appropriate time. Later research replicating this pattern in children facing surgery found the same divide: children who engaged in the “work of worrying” beforehand — who were less defensive and actively processed what was coming — reported minimal distress and anxiety following the surgery, while children who avoided the topic entirely and stayed defensively calm beforehand reported the most anxiety afterward.
The mechanism generalizes well beyond hospitals. Psychologists Lisa Aspinwall and Shelley Taylor formalized this into what’s now called proactive coping theory. Proactive coping refers to a set of processes through which people anticipate or detect potential stressors and act in advance to prevent them or mute their impact. Their framework treats future-oriented thinking not as anxious rumination but as a genuine psychological resource: proactive coping is an advanced cognitive-behavioral pattern aimed at anticipating stressful situations before they occur through pre-planning and organizing one’s own and social resources, and critically, avoiding or disengaging from a potential threat is considered an ineffective strategy — precisely because a person who disengages isn’t able to take appropriate measures to offset the stressor at the right moment.
There’s also research suggesting the not knowing is often worse than the bad outcome itself. Kate Sweeny’s research on waiting for uncertain news found that anxiety was actually higher while anticipating bad news than in the moment of facing it directly, and she’s summarized her broader findings by noting that waiting combines two of the most psychologically difficult states a person can be in: “not knowing what’s coming — uncertainty — and not being able to do much or anything about it — a lack of control.” The takeaway isn’t that certainty of a bad outcome is pleasant. It’s that unprocessed, unexamined uncertainty is its own distinct source of suffering — one that deliberate mental preparation directly targets, even when the eventual outcome can’t be changed.
Put simply: the research consistently shows that people who let themselves think clearly about a hard thing in advance — who do the quiet, sometimes uncomfortable work of imagining it, understanding its shape, and considering how they might respond — come out the other side in better psychological condition than people who either deny the possibility entirely or refuse to think about it until it’s already happening to them. This is precisely why this article exists. Not to hand you a five-step plan for surviving AI unemployment, because no honest five-step plan exists yet for a shift this large and this new. But to make sure that if or when some version of this reaches you — whether it’s your industry, your role, or simply the broader unease Georgieva describes as a tsunami on the horizon — you meet it as someone who has already done some of the work of worrying, rather than someone encountering the whole shape of it for the first time in the worst possible moment.
Holding This Without Being Consumed By It
There’s a real risk, in writing an article like this, of tipping someone from healthy anticipatory coping into the kind of catastrophizing that makes things worse rather than better. So it’s worth being explicit about the line between the two.
Healthy mental preparation looks like: acknowledging the uncertainty is real, understanding the psychological mechanisms that tend to activate under this kind of threat, and letting your sense of self rest on a wider foundation than any single professional identity — the way a resilient identity, as researchers describe it, rests on several pillars rather than asking one career to hold everything up. It does not require you to have already solved the problem, or to know exactly what you’ll do if your field is disrupted. It simply requires that the idea of disruption not be entirely foreign to your mind when and if it arrives.
Unhealthy catastrophizing looks like: treating every headline as certainty, letting a possible future consume your present, or quietly deciding your worth is already diminished because of something that hasn’t happened yet and may not happen in the way any single forecaster predicts. Remember that the same people warning of a “bloodbath” in 2025 were revising those predictions within a year, and that serious economists on both sides of this debate are still arguing about the actual shape of what’s coming. Uncertainty, as the research shows, cuts both ways — it’s genuinely stressful, but it also means the worst-case version isn’t inevitable.
