Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, who founded Apple in 1976, embodied the promise that computers could become tools for individuals rather than remain the property of large institutions.

That promise mattered. Personal computing genuinely expanded what people could create and communicate. Yet the language of empowerment could also obscure questions about ownership, dependency, and profit.

Human obsolescence is a narrative, not a policy obligation. Even when technology changes what work requires, societies still make choices about ownership, income, education, and public support.

Automated Services, Hidden Labour, and the Appearance of Efficiency

TESCREAL is an analytical label, not proof that these movements form one organisation or share every goal. The important question is how particular beliefs influence particular decisions.

AI Thinkers Disagree About Humanity’s Future

It is tempting to group every prominent AI thinker into one camp. Doing so obscures significant disagreements about whether powerful AI should be built, how quickly development should proceed, and what risks are acceptable.

This distinction matters especially for Eliezer Yudkowsky. His published position calls for shutting down advanced AI development because he believes it threatens human survival. This outlook overlaps with effective accelerationism, often abbreviated as e/acc: a movement associated with enthusiasm for faster technological change.

The critical question is what happens when speed becomes a moral commitment. Who can demand evidence of safety? Who decides that a cost is acceptable? What recourse do affected communities have?

A belief in technology’s benefits does not settle those questions. Nor does commercial success establish that a company should control the terms of public debate.

The danger is a decision-making culture in which slowing down to examine consequences is treated as failure before the consequences have even been assessed.

Who Counts as “Humanity” in Debates About AI?

The political question is whether those with the greatest power remain accountable to the people least able to escape the effects of their decisions.

Life Extension, Transhumanism, and the Risk of Greater Inequality

Preventing disease and increasing healthy years can be valuable goals. It would be unfair to assume that everyone funding this work is motivated by a desire to hoard power or abandon other people.

Longer lives would not excuse weaker accountability. Nor should speculative immortality become a reason to neglect people whose immediate needs remain unmet.

What We Can Do: Democratic Oversight, Privacy, and Human-Centred Technology

So what can we do about these risks? More than the rhetoric of inevitability suggests.

First, reject the claim that one particular technological future is unavoidable. The capabilities a technology makes possible do not determine how society must organise around it.

We can support scientific discovery while challenging exploitative business models. We can welcome tools that improve accessibility, reduce dangerous work, or help people create while demanding stronger safeguards and fairer distribution of the gains.

Understanding how surveillance capitalism turns personal data into profit helps connect abstract arguments about technological power to everyday questions of privacy and autonomy.

Public responses should include enforceable protections for personal data, meaningful scrutiny of market concentration, worker participation, and independent evaluation of high-impact systems.

We should also examine proposed safety measures on their actual terms. Protecting people online should not become a blanket justification for unnecessary identification, intrusive monitoring, or restrictions on lawful expression.

The future should be a democratic project rather than a set of choices presented to the public after they have already been made. Tax policy, competition policy, public investment, and institutional oversight can all influence who holds power and how it is exercised.

Culturally, we can value human art, journalism, care, and craftsmanship without demanding that every activity match the pace of automated production. Work that takes time is not worthless because a machine can produce something faster.

We need reporting that tests claims, follows incentives, and challenges concentrated power. Criticism becomes more effective when it is accurate enough to withstand scrutiny.

A Human Future Is Possible

The deepest concern is not that every technology executive secretly wants humanity to disappear. It is that institutions can impose serious risks while promising benefits that remain distant, uncertain, or unevenly shared.

A worldview that treats people as temporary obstacles to some grander future deserves resistance. So does a business model that treats their privacy, labour, and autonomy as expendable inputs.

But a human-centred technological future remains possible.

Harmful deepfakes, intrusive surveillance, exploitative automation, and worsening inequality are not unavoidable prices of progress. Their scale and distribution depend on design decisions, commercial incentives, public institutions, and collective action.

We can demand technologies that improve human lives without handing their owners unchecked authority over the future. We can distinguish useful innovation from inflated promises. And we can insist that people affected by technological change have a say in how it unfolds.

The future does not belong to Silicon Valley by default. The question is whether we build institutions strong enough to ensure it belongs to everyone.
